More Backing To Try And Beat Unfair Bingo Tax

Filed under: Bingo News — 15 May 2008

Complaints continue to build up against the government’s unfair double tax against bingo players, but the government has yet to do anything about it. Mark Formosa, a member of the Conservative Party and possible future MP, got involved while calling the numbers at his local Mecca Bingo hall in Taunton.

The problem stems from the fact that bingo is hit by a 15% gaming tax as well as the 17.5% VAT. Many people signed the SOB (Save Our Bingo) petition established by Mecca Bingo, including regular players as well as those that work within the industry, but there was no good news forthcoming in the budget.

We recently reported that Gerry Sutcliffe hinted that some assistance may come the way of the bingo industry, although that was more likely to be concerned with the increase in the number of £500 jackpot slot machines that would be allowed in bingo halls across the country.

No other gaming or gambling industry is subjected this double tax, and it is only the bingo industry and bingo players that are subjected to this unfair and unrealistic level of taxation. While nothing is done about it, bingo halls will continue to close down across the country and no respite will be forthcoming until something is done to right the wrong.
