Smoking in bars and restaurant banned in Michigan House because of bill

Filed under: Bingo News — 19 Dec 2007

According to the legislation passed by the state House, smoking is to be banned in many workplaces of Michigan including restaurants and bars.

The bill was passed following a 56-46 majority for supporters who have been building momentum for efforts for over a decade. However this bill is not expected to go far in the Senate because most of the Republicans oppose it.

Members of the Democratic controlled House wanted bars and restaurants to be excluded from the ban while others wanted private clubs to state their own rules.

However this was not agreed upon by a majority of representatives who declared that state residents needed a broad workplace smoking ban as more citizens prefer smokefree workplaces.

The places exempt from House legislation are horse tracks, cigar bars, bingo halls, casinos and smoke shops. However the Michigan Restaurant Association and Michigan Licensed Beverage Association will continue fighting this legislation.

Those opposing the bill stated that private businessmen and women should have their limitations when making decisions on private property that could affect their endeavors.

However supporters of the legislation prove that more than half of the states so far have implemented some sort of ban on smoking in public and workplace areas.

It was U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona who released a report last year blasting second hand smoke by stating that breathing of any amount of secondhand smoke is dangerous to nonsmokers.

He called for smokefree buildings and public places as separate smoking sections and ventilation systems don’t provide any protection to nonsmokers.

Seniors in Bakersfield fight for bingo games

Filed under: Bingo News — 18 Dec 2007

Senior citizens of Stockdale Villa Mobile Home Park of Bakersfield nearly had their bingo game shut because of the city charging them a $1,900 conditional use permit.

However these players didn’t find this right as they had been playing bingo every Wednesday night for about 20 years.

The Bingo Association president Darlene Phillips had enquired why this rule came into being and was told that the conditional permit had become mandatory. However with the group being a small group, they hardly rake in $75 which made them outraged.

This group has up to 20 players where playing bingo was one of the activities they looked forward to. So a player’s son contacted the Eyewitness News tipline, wherein Jim Movius of the city planning department met the staffer handling bingo permits.

They found out that the city had required bingo permits for years, and on checking on the zoning of the game, they found out that as Mobile Home Park is a residential zone, and bingo is not permitted in residential zones, they had to pay the conditional use permit.

However the planning department had a change of heart for Stockdale Villa needing a permit as they decided to grandfather all the small existing bingo games in residential areas.

With this development, Darlene Phillips advises everyone to stand up if they find something wrong. Remember that no one likes the news calling them, and if the news does call, they do the necessary research to check for truth in what you had said.
