The new ruling in that was put into force on September 1 now bans more than 1,000 gambling sites from advertising in the UK. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport state that the reason this rule was implemented is to control and stop unregulated gambling sites that work at attracting UK punters.
However sites located in UK, Europe and other ‘white list’ areas are permitted to advertise on TV, in print media and radio as long as they follow UK advertising rules. Those publishers, advertising companies and broadcasters who are found in breach face the liability of facing fines and imprisonment if they go against these advertising rules.
It is possible to be included in the white list only if companies prove that they follow a stringent regulatory regime. There is to be no excuses for banning adverts placed on websites that operate areas that don’t meet the strict standards of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
It is mainly because of the relaxation in current rules about adverts for gambling firms like betting shops and casinos that brought about this new legislation. Moreover recently released figures by Gambling Commission show that the number of people placing bets online in UK has recently increased.
However gambling sits located in the EU, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Alderney and other white-listed countries will still be permitted to advertise in UK.
