The first Minister of Scotland backs Bingo while Rank rejects Harrahs
An interesting incident comes to light of a politician who turned into a bingo caller to help improve the taxing regime that lies behind the wonderful game, Bingo.
Alex Salmond, the first Minister of Scotland took to stage to call a game of bingo, to show his support to the bingo industry.
He had pledged to do something about the way the Chancellor is now taxing bingo twice, unlike other games of the gaming industry.
In fact, he commented that he never could understand why and how a working class and innocent pastime like bingo would get taxed more than controversial and problematic casinos.
This is really a great move from a person in power in establishing connections between class and the game. Another piece of interesting news is the rejection of a proposal from Harrah’s Entertainment by Rank. Harrah’s had proposed to sell a portion of its LCI casinos for 28% stake in Rank, which was rejected.
However, it is other companies like Ladbrokes and William Hill that are considering merging with Rank. This would seem to be an interesting move for Rank in the coming months, considering the continued warnings it has gone through in falling revenues and attendances in the company.
